A short reflection on the definition of "Modernity" -- Are you and I Modern?

Enjoy -- and stay curious.

“Modernity” prioritizes progress and encourages society to highlight areas for improvement. Whether it’s discoveries in the pharmaceutical industry or advancements in AI, “Modernity” requires a cycle of learning and necessitates the understanding of nuanced elements of society that make our lives more predictable. Yet to fully acknowledge the complexities in life, an extent of synchronization must exist through universal inventions such as maps. In this regard, “Modernity” also assumes faith and trust among community members. For instance, when we use “Modern” SNS applications, the consumers assume that their personal information remains protected and ethical practices are followed. In “Modern” societies centered on expertise, consumers believe that the consequences of faith outweigh potential risks.

Given these parameters, while I benefit from universal items and global connections, my life does not necessarily align with the “Modern” emphasis on predictability and creating stability through careful plans. While I have a habit of scheduling my day and planning my upcoming future, there’s always something that slips through the gaps. Thus, when I establish order through plans, I face a strict limit. Moreover, the “Modern” framework of expertise deserves careful scrutiny. I believe our perceptions of expertise have changed with a developing culture of exploration. With the endless boundaries of knowledge, no one can be an absolute expert in any field. Thus, I can not always trust information from supposed experts. Humans are ultimately wandering through the unknown, searching for the “best” options without collaborative agreement on the criteria for what is deemed “best.”
