Weekly Whys: Arithmetic Signs!

Writer's picture: Kyle ParkKyle Park

The Problem:

Add any standard arithmetic signs that makes this equation true.

3 1 3 6 = 8

The Solution/Explanation:

This is definitely a question with more than one answer. We can start with simple plus signs and division signs.

( 3 + 1 ) / ( 3 / 6 ) = 8

Or, something a little more complex:

( ( 3 + 1 ) / 3 ) * 6 = 8

Why not throw in some saucy square root signs?

3 - 1 + sqrt ( 3 6 ) = 8

sqrt ( 3 - 1 ) / ( 3 / 6 ) = sqrt ( 8 )

Can you think of any other creative answers?
