The Problem:
What comes next in the following series?
SSS, SCC, C, SC
I first saw this question in William Poundstone's "Are You Smart Enough to Work at Google?"––an entertaining book with trick questions, difficult puzzles, and ridiculous riddles that are said to have appeared in Google interviews.
The Solution/Explanation:
The series is the letters of the alphabet in a silly code.
Think of it this way:
S = straight line
C = curved line
A, as a capital letter, is made up of three straight lines; hence, SSS. Capital B is made up of one straight line and two curved ones, so SCC. Capital C is made up of one curved line, so C. Capital D is made up of one straight line and one curved line, so SC. The next letter in the alphabet is E. E is made up of four straight lines. Thus, SSSS comes next in the given series.
